Lighthouse Ministries Ramp Assistance Medical Program (RAMP) is a reimbursement grant that is primarily funded by the United Way of Florence County.

This program assists low income Florence County disabled residents gain safe mobility in and out of their homes.  This program is coordinated with the assistance of Lighthouse Ministries’ volunteers.

“Scott” and “Karen” had been a typical young couple raising their three children, ages 12, 11 & 9 years old. Scott, 35, worked to provide for his family’s needs until earlier this year when their lives were completely changed.

Karen would never forget the day in February when she was notified that Scott had been involved in a serious car accident. He sustained significant injuries as a result of the impact of the crash and was transported to the hospital where it was discovered that he suffered a spinal cord injury that resulted in paralysis from the waist down.

Since then, Scott has had 4 major surgeries, including 2 spinal cord surgeries and major heart surgery. He has also received specialized rehabilitation therapy services in a Georgia Rehab Center. Karen, Scott’s primary caregiver, has had to arrange help from family and friends with transferring Scott up or down the steps of the home. A wheelchair ramp would make the task a safer and easier experience for all involved, but with the loss of income, they could not afford to buy material needed for construction.

Karen contacted Lighthouse Ministries to ask for help. After being interviewed and qualifying for the assistance, one of Scott’s relatives, “Ben”, was ready to lead the construction of the wheelchair ramp. The fact that Ben had to travel from North Carolina to lead and participate in the construction project was not a factor. Some members of Karen’s and Scott’s church also helped build the ramp. This family is grateful for the help they received through Lighthouse Ministries and Florence County United Way to make mobility easier, safer and much more convenient for Scott.

My name is Logan Andrews and I am a current student in the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Florence darlington tech. I’m doing an assignment which requires me to find any organizations that would build ramps. However, I’m from Hartsville and the house I’m analyzing is in hartsville. Do y’all do hartsville or know anyone who does? If so, what are your requirements?
